Right above the kidneys, there are two small glands, known as Adrenal glands. These glands are composed of two parts: the adrenal cortex( an external part ) and adrenal medulla (the central part). The adrenal cortex is accountable for creating numerous hormones that are vital for human health, such as cortisol and corticosterone, These hormones affect the body’s response to stress (infections, surgeries, hypoglycemia, etc.), Additionally, it is also responsible for aldosterone hormone that is associated with the regulation of blood pressure. The human immune system plays an important role in protecting the body against attacks from foreign bodies like bacteria/viruses/parasites and other infections. But often the immune system gets confused with some of its tissues and considers them as foreigners and in response produces antibodies against its own tissues, which becomes the reason for many “autoimmune” diseases.
When the immune system produces antibodies against the adrenal cortex, it leads to adrenal insufficiency and results in autoimmune adrenal diseases, like Addison's disease. Often, the presence of anti-adrenal antibodies(also known as anti-21-hydroxylase) is the only noticeable autoimmune disorder, but occasionally, it is part of a grouping of other autoimmune disorders like hypothyroidism, pernicious anemia, etc.

If Adrenal Antibody Screen is positive, then Adrenal Antibody Titer will be performed at an additional charge (CPT code(s): 86256).
