The human immune system plays an important role in protecting the body against attacks from foreign bodies like bacteria/viruses/parasites and other infections. But often the immune system gets confused with some of its tissues and considers them as foreigners and in response produces antibodies against its own tissues, which becomes the reason for many “autoimmune” diseases.
When the immune system produces antibodies against the adrenal cortex, it leads to adrenal insufficiency and results in autoimmune adrenal diseases, like Addison's disease. Often, the presence of anti-adrenal antibodies(also known as anti-21-hydroxylase) is the only noticeable autoimmune disorder, but occasionally, it is part of a grouping of other autoimmune disorders like hypothyroidism, pernicious anemia, etc.
