As the building blocks of proteins, amino acids play a vital role in metabolism, immune function, synthesis of hormones, and maintaining a healthy nervous system. The Amino Acid Analysis Plasma Blood Test can help detect and monitor amino acid deficiencies in the body. This profile measures blood levels of the essential amino acids: lysine, methionine, histidine, leucine, isoleucine, valine, threonine, tryptophan, and phenylalanine. It also checks the levels of nonessential amino acids, including taurine, arginine, and many more.

More specifically, the panel tests for 34 different amino acids. The assay may be used to detect...

The assay may be used to detect and diagnose for, but not limited to conditions like phenylketonuria (a rare genetic condition causing amino acid called phenylalanine to build up in the body), tyrosinemia (a genetic disorder usually found in inborn, in which the body cannot effectively break down the amino acid tyrosine), citrullinemia (a genetic disorder that causes ammonia and other toxic substances to accrue in the blood), non-ketotic hyperglycinemia( is a rare, genetic, metabolic disorder in which the enzyme system is unable to break down the amino acid glycine, resulting in an accumulation of glycine in the body's tissues and fluids), maple syrup urine disease(a rare, inherited metabolic disorder), and homocystinuria (an inherited disorder that keeps the body from processing the essential amino acid methionine).

Amino acids are usually classified as essential (which have to be taken in through diet as they cannot be produced by the body), non-essential (need not be taken in through diet as they can be produced by the body), and conditionally essential amino acids (a type of nonessential amino acids that are classified as conditionally essential only under specific circumstances such as illness or stress). The test may also be utilized for evaluating the nutritional status of patients.
