Generally, the liver processes ammonia and changes it into another waste product called urea. Urea is eliminated through the body in the form of urine, but if the body can't process or eliminate ammonia, it builds up in the bloodstream. Elevated blood ammonia levels have been associated with severe liver dysfunction such as hepatic encephalopathy (a condition where the liver is not able to properly process ammonia, which ultimately builds up in the blood and travels to the brain causing disorientation, coma, and even it could be life-threatening), Reye syndrome(a severe medical condition that causes brain and liver damage), Urea cycle disorders( where the body is unable to convert ammonia into urea), coma resulting from cirrhosis. Additionally, increased ammonia levels in Infants and children may cause frequent vomiting, Irritability, lack of energy, seizures, and difficulty breathing.
Please do not exercise prior to testing. It is best that your blood is taken in a rested state.
