Androstenedione is a precursor of testosterone and other androgens, as well as of estrogens like estrone, in the body and is found in the blood of both males and females. It is secreted by the ovaries in women, the testicles in men, and by the adrenal glands in both genders. The levels of androstenedione in the blood may be used to
● help evaluate adrenal gland function
● detect and diagnose adrenal tumors, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) producing tumors or cancers and separate these conditions from ovarian or testicular tumors and cancers.
● diagnose congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) and monitor CAH treatment given.
● help diagnose polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and it may be measured when a woman has infertility issues or symptoms that can vary in severity like excessive facial and/or body hair, lack of or irregular menstruation, Muscularity, etc.).
● detect and diagnose the cause of male physical characteristics (virilization) in females.
● help determines the cause of precocious puberty (child's body begins changing into that of an adult (puberty) too soon) or delayed puberty in boys.
● help examine the cause of ovarian or testicular failure
