Bartonella henselae (B henselae) and Bartonella quintana (B quintana) are tiny, rod-shaped, pleomorphic (able to assume different forms), Gram-negative bacteria (GNB). Pediculus humanus, the body louse (an ectoparasite louse that infests humans) is the proposed vector for B quintana . On the other hand domestic cats are considered to be the principal reservoir and vectors of B henselae . The B henselae infection is asymptomatic in cats. The transmission of B henselae from cats to humans occurs through scratches, bites, or licks when the bacterium exists on the cat’s claws or oral cavity. Openings in...

Pediculus humanus, the body louse (an ectoparasite louse that infests humans) is the proposed vector for B quintana . The transmission of B henselae from cats to humans occurs through scratches, bites, or licks when the bacterium exists on the cat’s claws or oral cavity. Openings in the skin is the sight of entry for Bartonella bacteria.
It is found that B henselae has been related to cat scratch disease (CSD or cat scratch fever- a bacterial infection spread by cats ), peliosis hepatis (PH- a rare vascular condition of the liver), and endocarditis (severe infection and inflammation of the heart muscles and valves). B quintana infection (historically called ‘trench fever’) on the other hand is associated with a wide variety of clinical conditions, including chronic bacteraemia, endocarditis, lymphadenopathy (a disease of the lymph nodes), and bacillary angiomatosis (vascular proliferative disease typically involving the skin and regional lymph nodes)(1). The Bartonella Species Antibodies Blood Test (IgG, IgM) with reflex to titer is used to detect and diagnose the Bartonella infection. A positive result for IgM testing suggests a current infection with either B henselae or B quintana. on the other hand, a positive IgG, recommends a current or previous infection. Rises in IgG titers in serial specimens is a sign and symptom of an active B henselae or B quintana infection.

Bartonella henselae IgG, IgM; Bartonella quintana IgG, IgM.
