Bilirubin is an orange-yellow pigment produced primarily by the normal breakdown of heme. Hemoglobin found in red blood cells (RBCs) contains heme. The liver ultimately processes the bilirubin and changes its chemical make-up so that it can be removed from the body. Bilirubin usually exists in two forms: Direct or conjugated bilirubin (after conjugation in the liver with glucuronic acid) and Indirect or free" or unconjugated bilirubin (while circulating in the body). The Bilirubin, Direct Blood Test measures the conjugated (direct) bilirubin in the body. This is measured to evaluate a person's liver function or...

This is measured to evaluate a person's liver function or to screen for or monitor liver disorders. Additionally, measurement of the levels of bilirubin is used in the diagnosis and treatment of hemolytic (a type of anemia - in which red blood cells are destroyed faster than they can be made)., hematologic (blood-related), and liver-related metabolic disorders, including hepatitis, gallstones, inflammation of the bile duct. If the level of bilirubin is elevated in the blood, a person may appear jaundiced. The bilirubin direct blood test may prove helpful in the differentiation of hepatic (liver) disorders.
