Bilirubin is a waste product produced by the normal breakdown of heme and is orange-yellow. Hemoglobin found in red blood cells (RBCs) contains heme. The liver ultimately processes the bilirubin and changes its chemical make-up so that it can be removed from the body. There are two forms of bilirubin that exist in the body. Direct or conjugated bilirubin (after conjugation in the liver with glucuronic acid) and Indirect or unconjugated bilirubin (while circulating in the body). Testing for fractionated bilirubin includes testing for total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, and indirect bilirubin. Measurement of the levels...

Testing for fractionated bilirubin includes testing for total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, and indirect bilirubin. Measurement of the levels of bilirubin is used in the detection, screening, and treatment of liver, hemolytic anemia, hematologic (blood-related), and liver-related metabolic disorders, including hepatitis, gallstones, inflammation of the bile duct. Elevated levels of bilirubin in the body may cause a yellowing of the skin and eyes, a condition called jaundice.
