The D-dimer blood test is used to detect D-Dimer in the bloodstream. When one gets injured/ got any cut, blood clumps up /clotting takes place. Blood clotting is an important part of healing that prevents one from losing too much blood during a body injury. The body doesn’t need any blood clots once the bleeding stops. And thus, takes a few steps to break the blood clot after healing. At the end of this process, few leftover substances remain in the bloodstream which is known as D-Dimer. It is the part of the protein fragments that are made from the breakdown of a blood clot. The doctor may recommend this test if he/she suspects having a blood clot even after healing. The blood clot turns to be dangerous if formed in a deep vein called deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The DVT is usually found in the legs. On the other hand, if the clot travels to the lungs, called a pulmonary embolism (PE), it may interrupt the flow of blood and may cause death.
Please do not exercise prior to testing. It is best that your blood is taken in a rested state.
