The Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (also known as oral herpes) Blood Test is used to determine the presence of Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 infection. It detects antibodies against Herpes Simplex Virus type 1. This test is recommended for those considered high risk for the disease and who suffer from symptoms of Herpes such as genital itching, painful urination, and blisters in the mouth or genitals. HSV-1 is usually transmitted through oral secretions or sores on the skin and can be spread through kissing or sharing drinking glasses, utensils, toothbrushes, etc. with a person who has an HSV infection. The test is used to determine previous exposure to the virus.
