Methylmalonic acid (MMA) is a substance produced in very small amounts and is necessary for human metabolism and energy production. Homocysteine is an amino acid used by the body to make proteins.Vitamin B12 helps to break down methylmalonic acid and homocysteine. When vitamin B12 is low, blood levels of these two substances rise. The Methylmalonic Acid (MMA) Test is frequently  used to help identify and monitor an early or mild vitamin B12 deficiency. When folate is low, blood levels of homocysteine can also rise.Together, these two tests can provide helpful information about vitamin B12 and folate status. In addition,,  these tests may be useful in evaluating macrocytosis, a term used to describe red blood cells that are larger than normal.

Methylmalonic Acid 87-318 nmol/L
Homocysteine
  Male <11.4 umol/L
  Female <10.4 umol/L

Homocysteine is increased by functional deficiency of folate or vitamin B12. Testing for methylmalonic acid differentiates between these deficiencies. Other causes of increased homocysteine include renal failure, folate antagonists such as methotrexate and phenytoin, and exposure to nitrous oxide.
