The test is used to assess gonorrhea, a common bacterial sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium. DGI signs and symptoms include fever, multiple skin cuts, tender swelling of joints (gonococcal arthritis), infection of the inner lining of the heart, and inflammation of the membrane that covers the brain and spinal cord (meningitis).
